4 Benefits of Working With Job Recruiters
Let’s face it – finding a job is a difficult task.
And given there are around 1.8 million unemployed Canadians (a number made worse because of the pandemic) actively looking for work, securing your ideal position is even more of a challenge given the competition.
Whether you have recently been let go, are in search of your dream job, or are a fresh graduate, a job recruiter may be the best option to secure employment rather than sending in application after application to online postings.
“A company will get hundreds – even thousands – of resumes for one job posting and they end up just blindly choosing which ones they look at,” Terry Craig, the founder of both Verge Careers and CareerHero and a recruiter.
Below, we explore what job recruiters are, the benefits of working with these individuals, and the main drawback.
What are Job Recruiters?
Job recruiters are hired by companies to find candidates.
“As a candidate, you don’t have to hire a recruiter or pay for their services. Since recruiters get paid by the company, they work for free with you,” said Craig. “You, as a candidate, are a commodity, and job recruiters shop you around to their clients.”
If a recruiter doesn’t have a position for you or doesn’t work in your vertical, the good ones will take an extra step to help you in your search.
“If I don’t have a position for somebody, I will still help them in any way I can by asking them to go home and email me five companies they’d like to work for. Then, I will send them five titles of people who work at those companies so they can reach out.”
The goal of job recruiters is to match the perfect candidate with their ideal company.
Why Work with Job Recruiters?
1. Companies trust a recruiter’s judgment
Companies hire recruiters and therefore trust their judgment. They know when they’re sent candidates, these individuals are pre-screened and pre-qualified.
“I tell my companies that I’ll fill whatever position in five resumes. In those five resumes, companies will want to work with at least three and have a high probability of hiring one of the five.”
And since the recruiter is working directly with the companies, your resume gets sent right to the hiring manager.
2. Recruiters have access to exclusive jobs
According to Craig, at least 50% of the jobs in the market do not make it to the open market. The only way to discover these positions is through a recruiter or conducting some in-depth research and going directly to a company’s website.
With that said, not all companies post their most current or active openings. It’s something they have to work at and stay on top of, in the end, finding these exclusive jobs is a lot of work for you as the candidate.
3. Recruiters talk salary for you
By using a recruiter, you no longer have to have that awkward salary conversation with companies.
Job recruiters know your value and the market value of the position you’re going for.
“As a recruiter, I help negotiate the deal, helping take away from any discomfort, not everyone is comfortable asking for a fair and decent wage, talking about money makes a lot of people uncomfortable,” said Craig. “When candidates tell me what salary they want, I will go out and work for them and get a fair deal for both parties.”
4. Recruiters help you navigate the job market
Recruiters help improve your chances of landing a solid job because they:
- Know the job market
- Review countless resumes daily and therefore know what works
- Know what companies are looking for
- Know how to help your resume and job application stand out
- Can give guidance on how to crush your interview
- And so much more
“I give my candidates all the facts and they make the decision of whether or not they want to take the job,” said Craig.
The Drawback of Using Job Recruiters
Job recruiters – especially the good, trustworthy ones with a strong sense of integrity – are extremely busy and therefore it may be difficult to find one to work with.
Craig, for example, has close to 100 new people emailing him weekly for only a few available positions.
“There’s not enough time in the day to handle all of the requests,” said Craig. “I don’t have the capacity and there isn’t a recruiter in town who does. We can only juggle x amount of jobs and x amount of candidates at one given time in certain verticals, and there are so many verticals to work in.”
This is why Craig created CareerHero.
